Of course not where I expected while fishing for crappie.
Also caught a 5 lb carp on my jig, legit in the top lip. Unbuttoned right on shore.
Lots of carp surfacing around me.
    No crappie around.
    Hmmmm.
    🤔

Took my son into northern algonquin for a loop trip. All in we did 30 kms in portages. Fishing was awesome for specks in some of those back lakes. No monsters but good numbers. Proud of the boy, tough as nails.

Lypsyl (hypo alergenic) lip balm( unflavored) works great.   $1.25 @ dollar tree!  Try it!

And just so as you know, there are two types of "floatant" ...... one, usually in the form of a liquid or paste, that you apply to the fly before fishing. However, over a period of time the fly will become less bouyant at which point you would use the second type which is actually a dessicant and will dry the fly out somewhat enabling it to float again.  This too will become less effective after a while at which point you tie on another fly, dress it with liquid/paste and continue as above.

Another use for the paste is to dress your flyline and/or leader to help it ride high on the water surface.  This is generally used in stillwater situations to help detect subtle strikes that you may not feel.  You watch the end of your line or leader like a hawk and if it twitches, strike.

I didn't even get a sniff on the small pike bucktails. We've had a bit of Rain before Sunday and the water was in fact a bit stained, but I had the day off and figured I'd give it a shot.

I fished for about half an hour and the water was pretty stained.
    I was using a spinnerbait.

Yes Smerchly that is the pattern. Pine Squirrel Zonker strips aren't the most common material to find. So I substituted in a Olive Rabbit zonker strip trimmed thinner.I use a huge amount of Rabbit strips for Trout,Bass,Steelhead,Snook, and Bonefish...Its the material that catches everything..

If you are keen on hatch fishing I would make sure you have some Tan Caddis patterns..There's always Caddis on the water... There is also a good chance a fish will take a Caddis pattern even in a May Fly hatch..Just sayin

Just got back from Walmart to get some eats and garden seeds . When I got there , 4 police cruisers were parked in front of the door and one had some store items on the hood . I said to the greeter guy , "looks like lots of action going on out there " He said they had to take down a female as she was pretty wild" . Shoplifting !
I've seen the cops there a few times but never with 4 cruisers .
Sad state of our society when it happens so often these days .
And oh yes , I have seen the empty fishing lure boxes hanging on the rack !   😯

The Lance Egan Poacher has been working really well for me lately....Tied on size #8 Jig Hook with a 4 mm. tungsten bead...I fish it on my 4wt.  with about 6ft of straight 4X tippet.....Pop it into tight pockets or float it on an Indicator in slow pools....

I'd guess it is the city.

You may very well be right.  Broadly speaking there are two trains of thought in fly fishing ...... pattern v presentation.  The pattern guys think that only a specific fly will catch fish, the presentation folks think the depth of presentation and speed of retrieve (from 0 - 10) is more important than the actual pattern (within reason).  And they both catch fish.  Discovering which camp you fall into is part of the journey ...... the only correct answer is, whichever brings you the most pleasure.

I should have been more specific, I meant the bead head was probably fishing deeper or getting down quicker than the more realistic fly you changed it for.

They have big runs of white perch at Quinte and one could have a blast catching them with a fly rod .
The same goes for silver bass . There were heavy runs of them at the River and Port  Dal. Harbour . We used a Shyster with a yellow fly.
And ....a lonnnng time ago we used small flies to catch gills and crappies in the St. Catharines  Water Treatment  Reservoir .  (memories) 🥰

That’s awesome you got into some fish. Any tug on a fly rod is a good one.

Tried another spot. Water still murky, but enough current and depth to hopefully get something.
I used a larger bucktail fly (can't remember name) that floats really well (used as strike indicator) and added a 18" dropper to a beadhead nymph.
Caught four white perch in the current seem.
I changed the bead head for something more creature looking, maybe slightly larger, and caught nothing.
Went back to the beadhead and caught the 5th white perch and packed it in.
Learned something. How picky they can be and the spot they came out of.
