I remember as kid riding my bike down to both Main St and Lakeport Rd locations and feeling the same way. The more times you visit and show you are passionate and willing to spend money, they'll know you by name in no time  I had crush on the daughter too, so.... ^_^

I had a crush on his wife.......bought my Can.Tire Options card from her ....... :santa:

I know a lot of these local shop employees are on incentives to push products and receive rewards for selling the most.I don't like to be pushed into buying something I don't really want.Sometimes they will really argue with you telling you how much better there product is,when all you want is the product that you are comfortable with.

Very much looking forward to shopping at the new BPS. Sick of haggling with small shops over warranties, lack of stock ( i.e. 2 types of spinnerbaits, 1 type of tube, limited options...) even willing to pay a little more for 1 stop shopping.

As far as I know G-Loomis is the only brand I've heard of that being applied to, sell x amount n get a rod, I work at a shop and have never had a sales rep offer me incentives for selling x amount of items.

I prefer to patronize the local shops to get the best service . The prices are very reasonable considering they don't order a thousand fishing reels at a time etc. When I'm looking for a new rod or reel I can take my time & get the feel of each reel and get a rod to match with the help of the knowledgeable staff/owner . Big box stores have taken away the "mom & pop" out of many stores that most young people never knew existed . Most local shops have live bait as well .If looking for top quality & willing to pay more , have your rods & other gear built by the pro's and not mass produced by robots. If I happen to go to the new plaza , I may check out the Bass Pro store to have a look at the fish & boats etc. , but my fishing gear will be bought at the local shops ( or stuff pre-owned from other anglers) ;)

The first store I bought tackle ( long shank guts hooks) was called Holmes Hardware on Pelham Rd. in the 50's .....I also bought fishing & hunting gear at Russ Moshers on St.Paul St......then at Herzogs near Geneva St. Also bought from Steve Wells in Port , John Raso in Welland & another shop on East Main , & I have stopped at Grimsby Tackle when I was out that way . I hope the small shops that are left can survive the competition from the big players .

Bottom line is when I buy things I like knowing the place and person working at least has an interest in fishing and not just a sales person working there for a pay check and zero idea. Big stores hire to fill spots and shifts not hire for knowledge.

Definitely, box stores for the most part lack avid anglers like ourselves that actually have a knowledge of and passion for the sport.

And about the pay so you won't sell out and shop there because u wanna support the small shop but you'll see out and work there if the moneys right. Hahahahaha classic hipocrit. Read a book. And after come over and read the business degree I have. Lol

It must be a business degree, because your grammar is terrible. Sorry, couldn't resist!

That has never happened to me...not sure where you're shopping.

If you don't leave your comfort zone, we would all still fish with a worm and bobber!

Yeah, not really. You don't stay in business long if your selling cows and hire a chicken expert! Anyone who gets up in the morning and goes to work is there for a paycheck...why are you diminishing that?

BPS is going to be a destination shop. It's not so much for locals, but those who come from out of town. It's place for men to go while their wives flock to the Coach outlet. We all need to realize that BPS is a totally different thing than a local shop.

I buy all my reels and rods from a local for the most part. I like to hold and feel it before I buy it. However, if my local doesn't carry a specific rod or lure, I can't be guilted into only buy there. Can I only shop at Fishing Store A or can I go to Fishing Store B? Where is my boundary, so I can say I still shopped local. A well run business isn't going anywhere because a big box store is coming into town. Competition is great for the customer and will make a good business, better. The small shops need to offer a better experience than everyone one else, not just the big box stores. If another small tackle shop came into the region, are we allowed to shop their or can we only shop at the old store because it was there first.

One thing I can honestly say is BPS has one of the best rainsuits on the market. I can't get it at a local, because its a house brand. Can I buy clothes at BPS...or boots. How about a couch or a light fixture? What about a bass area rug? BPS is more of a lifestyle shopping experience than a tackle shop.

What about the weekend warriors who will now come down to check out BPS, rather than heading to Vaughan and then up north. They will stay and fish and generate other money in the region, staying the weekend and hiring a local guide, eating at local restaurants, going to the casino...last I checked the Americans aren't coming over like they did, why not lure tourists here from other areas. The money that is generated indirectly by BPS will probably help, not hinder local businesses. The more fishing stuff BPS sells, it keeps me employed, so I can go and buy stuff from my local shop! It's funny how economics works isn't it!

For the record, on-line shopping can do more damage to small business than a big box!

...and how come nobody said anything when Sail came to Burlington or Cabelas in Buffalo? Why is it Bass Pro taking the heat?

.

Yeah really. Every person hired at BPS you think actually is an outdoors person?

And again I dont think its bashing the place saying some people prefer local shops because the people working have an idea.

Each persons choice I guess.

(Sorry could go one but no time to type in length going fishing)

Yeah, really!

If the person has no intrrest in the outdoors and just need a job, chances are they will be entered into a position as such. It would be very bad placement if a person who is shy and doesn't interact well with others is placed in a sales position. CSR, Management, Warehouse, cleaner...do they really need a passion and knowledge of the outdoors? Are they going to hire people who love and have a passion for fishing or hunting or boating for the corresponding areas...more than likely.

Furthermore, if I was was hired at BPS and was a part of this forum and all I kept reading about was the lack of knowledge I have because I got hired there, I think I would be pretty offended. People shouldn't feel shamed to work at BPS because their fishing skills will be second guessed by every "pro" from this forum that walks through the doors. You never know who will work there or need a job to support their loved ones and no one should ever feel shamed for where they work!!!

Did you get hired?

Yup, hired. Have been in the store stocking for a few weeks now. I have no customer service experiance. But was hired solely on the fact that i know this area. And I know what I'm talking about. When it comes to my department (fishing)

Everyone has good points but lets face it:

1. if your wife is going shopping at the outlets us guys will be in BPS

2. if BPS is having a huge sale we will be there taking advantage of the savings

3. if a relative of yours is working there and you can get a discount you will be going there

4. I will also say when it opens 90% of us will go there for the first time and a percentage will be hooked

We can debate this till the cows come home but for me it will come down to savings, if I have a major purchase to make and I can save a few bucks I will do that it is called smart shopping and with their website is only a click away.

I'll add my nickel to the conversation for what it's worth...

Let's not forget how much support the local shops continually give to all the local clubs, event's, tournament's and derbies.

X2 on that one. Be nice if they had a table in the shops to sit and have a coffee and shoot the crap.

Every time I go to the local shops I run into someone to talk to and the visit becomes longer than intended, some times forgetting what I went in for

Hey Jordan make sure you mention when you see the guys on here that are bashing bps. Sure it won't take long for them to come.

And good job staying off the unemployment line and finding a job locally involving something you love. Head up kid

people will have their opinions. I will shop at bass pro for bass pro brands and house products due to a nice discount. As for reels, flies, rods and anything specialized I will still go to mom and pop shops. I'm currently working 2 jobs. Bass pro happen's to be one of them.complain all yiu want but wheen it comes to fishing we are all the same, a person who loves to fish. So don't scrutinize someone for buying big box, they more than likely have their reason for it.

After the army, BPS is one of my options for work. However, I'd be going for MNR or Parks related careers first.

I'm just curious if I'd get hired at BPS.

Thank you for your service

Bass Pro Shops also sell items not available at your local fishing/hunting store. For example, I purchased a Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition knife sharpener at BPS hunting department, it's the best knife sharpener I've owned. I've been a really great knife sharpener since I was fourteen years, this sharpener can enable a novice to sharpen a dull filleting knife to a razer edge in less than fifteen minutes. Check it out here:
