  1. I always thought pickerel was the Canadian name for them and walleye just the yankee version.
  2. Bill, where in the world did he catch a 13.5 Lb walleye at Waterford - in the ponds there?
  3. They are even scarier from the water while in a boat. Way back in the 80’s my cousin and I were fishing pickerel way out from Pt. Colborne near the international boundary one morning. About 9:30 we were busy catching fish, then happened to look north towards Pt. There were 2 waterspouts coming down the lake about 1/2 way back to the shore, one following the other. We just sat out there for a while wondering if we were going to have to head to Erie, PA. They gradually moved east down the lake, and by 12:30 we were able to head back to Port - were real glad to get off the water that day!!

    Sea Foam

I learned that lesson the hard way 3 years ago. Was on a one-time chance to go on an ice fishing trip to Lake Simcoe and my gas auger quit working! The repair shop had to clean the carb FIVE times to get all the crud out from ethanol in the regular gas eating out the inside of the plastic fuel lines. Only use non-ethanol premium now in all my small engines, and still add sea foam! Follow Lundtastic’s advice if you want to keep your small engines running properly!!
  5. Fall turkey hunting is hit or miss. Dont hear gobblers calling from morning roost tree, so no idea where they are roosting. Also, on our family farm, they never are in the same tree areas that they are in the spring, so more pot luck to get one. Usually get them in the spring on field fence tree rows, but going to try the big bush this fall, cause I have only seen a few droppings along the field edges this past 2 trips to the farm scouting.
  6. Im not a warm weather deer hunter either. I have a 55 minute drive home from the family farm near Cayuga, and don’t want a deer sitting in the back of my jeep that long in warm temps. I plan on hunting turkey for most of October, then start deer hunting late in October when the weather cools down enough for the drive home.
  7. Certainly enough yellowjackets and bees around our area in Welland!
  8. We were visiting our daughter and her family in New Brunswick, and saw this sign at the beginning of one of the town walking trails. Thought every community should have something like this bottom sign posted on trails,
  9. They did mine too - great job! Really recommend them.
  10. The rods you guys are talking about look like the southern U S crappie poles. they are reelless, and can be up to 16 feet or longer. I think they were called cane pole rods because the early ones were bamboo cane. Check this site: Www.bnmpoles.com
  11. If you watch your weather reports you can easily fish L Erie on calm mornings. Free launch on Point Abino Rd just as you come to the bay and the bay is good for smallmouth bass. Also a free launch at Pt Maitland on the east side so you could either fish the lake there or the lower Grand River.
  12. I was the one with the electric trolling motor on the yak. Caught 2 bass, and lost 3 others - learned I need a landing net for the yak, so bought one the next day!
  13. Dave, were you at Pt. Abino opening morning in a foot peddled yak?
  14. This is NOT JUST a fishing forum!! The header for this is “Hunting and Conservation”, and that is what this is in reference to. Cats are house pets, and should be kept inside because they are killers of birds and small mammals! Saturday morning while I was loading my kayak on the Jeep at dawn a fox came trotting down the street with what looked like a cat in his mouth … Figured he saved a lot of neighbourhood wildlife with that prize!!
  15. Took my son and grandson out this morning to CB in the tin boat - I let them fish while I ran the boat. We started off fishing the shallow areas where I got my bass yesterday, but no bass at all - my son just got a sheephead. Water was choppy, with small whitecaps - we were the only boat out there this morning. Kept working our way out till we finally got to our usual catch area, bouncing around in the waves. Grandson ended up catching 2 bass there - I estimate one about 3 1/2 Lbs and the other close to 4 Lbs. Had to quit after the second bass as the grandson got seasick from the bouncing around. Was real glad to see him get the fish - last year he got the biggest bass of the season (close to 5 Lbs.) Have to try and get out there later in the week with my kayak again.
  16. Back in the early 1970’s the MNR used to encourage hunters to shoot any cat seen in the wild because of all the damage they did. Unfortunately they dropped that because of all the do- gooders complaining.
  17. “The head of Countryside Alliance says the number of animals being hunted is tiny in comparison to those being killed by domestic cats“ Domestic cats kill up to 270 million wild animals a year in the UK, with those in countryside areas responsible for the majority, according to researchers from the University of Reading and Royal Holloway.
  18. Beautiful morning to get out - on the water by 6, quit at 9. Caught 2 bass, lost 3 more before I could get them to the yak. All caught trolling - couldn’t get any fish drifting ant casting the same lures. Also got a 5-6 Lb sheephead.. So glad I got the trolling motor bracket for my kayak - can now focus full time on fishing rather than paddling.
  19. Shad raps work best there for smallmouths Bill, and FAR more effective trolling - and thats from fishing that area since the 1970’s.
  20. We went once several months ago after our daughter told us about Farm Boy, but seemed very pricy, and the veggies are just as nice at our Zehrs, so haven’t been back since. Got the very distinct impression it is a Yuppie store.
  21. We always go out to the middle of the bay, and troll 12-15 foot depths. Seem to have the best luck on opening weeks at those depths at Pt. Abino. Thats one of the main reasons why I got a trolling motor bracket for my kayak. We have tried shallower, but always catch far fewer fish. Also, trolling vs casting always seems to be more priductive for us.
  22. Was supposed to go out with my son tomorrow in the tin boat, but he has an appt., so can’t go. So instead, i am planning on taking my kayak out early to Pt. Abino bay and fish smallmouths before it gets too hot! Looking forward to finally try out the trolling motor on my yak to see how it works.
  23. Sadly, Global News has reported that they found the body of the missing fisherman in Lake Erie.
