Wish I would have had my shotgun with me on the way home. Just casually walking down the street without a care in the world. P.S I wouldn't have actually shot from my truck,  just being funny.

That's quite a beard. You should have opened the back door and tried to call him in.

  2. Beautiful opening day morning. Got going a bit late but in my spot and set up by 5:30am.  Lots of gobbling around 6:30 in the adjacent bush talked back and forth but seemed to move off slowly in the wrong direction. Just after 7  two hens walked out into the field a couple hundred hards away and milled about, slowly making their way away from me down the bush line and then turned and came back. Two more hens came out to join them, followed by a big Tom that stood at the brush line for about 10 minutes. I was finally able to get his attention and he spent about 20 minutest working his way towards my set up. At the same time three deer were making their way straight down the field towards me. They seemed very intrigued by the decoys, calls and the big tom. The Tom got within 60 yards and the deer 75, the Tom and the deer had a bit of a standoff with the Tom finally deciding to head back to the woods. Damn! Not what I expected but at least they all put on a bit of a show!

That might have been me ......    .... I don't remember the blues being caught there but lots of silvers !

I have heard that too . We have better dna technology today which makes me question the validity of blue pickerel being a distinctive species . Why did they die off ? What caused them to become 'extinct' ? The blues in the 12 Mile were living mostly in L.Erie water plus some stream water from short Hills & Effingham Creek . But we also had tons of paper mill discharge going into Gibson and from the old canal system from Thorold into the 12 at the city core. So,  were these blues just reg.eyes with a different chemical makeup which brought on their demise ?  Today's science should be able to pin point the reason they died off ......But it was fun catching them as a kid !

It might have been Smerch although that would put you over 100 easily. lol. We used to fish for perch in the summer and browns around Jan/feb if memory serves correct down there. People used to come from all over to fill up truck loads of water bottles from the pure spring water that evidently turned out to get its special taste from the dump runoff🤢

  4. Unfortunately they were before my time, but I remember talking to an old timer (he was probably in his 60's at the time lol!) back in the 80's while fishing at the Queenston Sand Docks, that said that he used to catch them off the docks all the time.

The truck needs a new paint job anyways !

Pepi is a fatty as I saw her at 10:30 pm.  2 days ago.  I'm sure I'll lure her into my trap with those delicious chicken wings soon .

As a kid I remember a wrestler called Sky High Lee walking into my grandma's house with a skunk on his shoulder ...he was 6'8 !

6'8" wrestler with a skunk on his shoulder? Sounds like there might have been some Skunk Weed involved? Ha

  6. Yep vicious cycle to the lawn as the grubs will kill the grass and the skunks will tear it all up for good measure to get the grubs. Growing up my dad had an ongoing battle with grubs, he got his hands on some banned insecticide one year which killed the grubs along with half the birds in the neighbourhood. In my teens I put together a skunk assault rifle with a 22 and mag light with red lense, I used to stay up late to go on skunk patrol every spring.

  7. Went across the boarder yesterday to go skiing in Ellicottville. Crossed at Peace Bridge around 9:30 there was only one car at customs two booths open they did not ask if vaccinated, business as usual joked around a bit and on we went. Got into Ellicottville and they have a medical centre right at the entrance before turning to Holiday Valley, free rapid and pcr done at the same time, in and out in 15 minutes and received emailed rapid test results within an hour. Great day skiing only oldest daughter and wife were able to make it but great conditions and great to be back after 2 years.
Wanted to hit Gagsters in Niagara Falls on the way back for some pizza and wings, website said opened till 9, got there just after 8 and they were closed. They said they close early due to Covid but I think they just close early if they aren’t busy. Anyway they suggested we go to Good Fellas across the way, pizza was pretty good but wings not weren’t, weird beer selection too, no rolling rock, no MDG, no Bud. Should have gone to La Hacienda or?
Watched the gas prices and all hovering around $4 per gallon. Topped up the tank from just shy of half at $4.04 for $52 us total.  I did a calculation on a comparison to compare to what we are paying here and based on 1.70 per litre, US gallon converted to litters and the currency exchange taken into effect we are paying the equivalent $5.05 per US gallon, basically 25% more!
To add to the adventure after getting home my daughter was unloading the truck with the help of our two dogs and our youngest one took off into the night and she couldn’t call her back, so I sent my son and his friend go get her, damn dog had a skunk cornered under a neighbours car and was taking multiple direct hits and wouldn’t back down and I couldn’t get her called off and without getting sprayed myself could grab her. So started throwing snow balls at the stupid dog to scare it back so my son could grab her. Off to the car wash in town that has a dog was station. After and hour or so, bottle of dishwashing soap and hydrogen peroxide for good measure she was cleaned up pretty good. I haven’t talked to the neighbour yet but will walk over shortly and offer to wash their car for them. Luckily it was under his wife’s car and not his week old truck or I would feel really bad.
    Perfect adventurous day!

Can you go over the border with no proof of vaxx?

The Americans don’t seem to care if you are vaccinated however when coming back into Canada you will be required to quarantine for 2 weeks.

Ask yourself how bad the carbon footprint is in the creation of electric vehicles.  Worse….all the batteries are just as bad environmentally when those need constant disposal and replacement.

    Your absolutely right

  10. Hopefully this is a wake up call for people that support Carbon Tax and do not support Canadian oil production and the associated pipelines required to move it.

Oil is required by us and the rest of the world whether you personally like it or not. Better that it be produced by stable countries especially our own country and being able to benefit economically ourselves.

The end game of the carbon tax is to raise energy prices to the point where it will force people to alternatives. Take the subway, maybe if you live in Toronto, but that option doesn't work for 90% of Canada geographically? Electric cars, sounds good in theory but practical and affordable for few.

Call me negative but when I see the gov't giving me something back I wonder where they are going to take something from me (and we all know they are - or will be).

Leaving money in our pocket and cutting costs at the same time is a good thing. When the government offers to give you money through a shell game like the Carbon Tax, well that's a different story.

I spend more time clearing other driveways and side walk across the road than on my own property . Some have chronic breathing problems and the cold air is too much to handle . The snow plow keeps pushing more snowbank towards to curb until they can see the sewer drains . Got the belt adjusted today and the old girl runs fine ....but it's so damn NOISY !  ....I wear the muffs !

Good on you Smerch. Yes, shovelling seems to be a high risk activity. Fathers of two of my kids friends had heart attacks this week both snow related, both in their 50's, one made it one didn't.

I think the news said St.Catharines got the most snow of everywhere. Confirmed just over 50cm. I dont ever remember this much snow before? Can anyone confirm this was more or less than the big storm of 1977?

This was child's play compared to the blizzard of 77, That was a true balls to the wall blizzard, this was just a little dusting in comparison.

Older , and wiser .  We elders have thinner skin so we try our best to keep above the ice ,

I've been putting all day getting my one man hut out of my junkie garage , taking the sides off the wagon to make it a.flatbed ....no snow , easy to pull all the gear over dry ground , or a few inches of snow.... looking good out there .

Agree, unfortunately I'm finding that getting older and wiser isn't nearly as much fun as being young and stupid!

  15. Looks like it's starting to shape up nicely. Going to get the Argo ready for the first Erie trip of the year. Need to be ready! A buddy wanted to hit the Grand today, I took a pass but maybe next week. Something about thin ice and current doesn't excite me any more! Must be getting old?
