I've just heard that a longstanding member of the Niagara fishing community passed away. Gary Whiting finally lost the fight after 2 major strokes earlier this year.  Many know him as the owner of Sink er Swim Tackle.  A great guy.  Always enjoyed fishing with him from the banks.

And Port D Guy , I  was looking for you at Port today and I think I fished your walleye spot .... The water level is up and about a foot visibility and the current flow is faster than normal so I used a 3/4 oz.weight with my worm harness . The sky looked mean as the thunder rolled but I got about 30 min.of fishing in before I got soaked.
To my surprise I had a hard hit and the fish was a real strong fighter , using my 10' Okuma rod & 10 lb. mono line. I was thinking I hooked a big sheephead, or channel cat . After 10 minutes or so I finally got it to the surface after a few good runs in the fast current & to my surprise it was a PDG walleye .  I didn't weigh it & returned it to the water quickly ( too large to eat ). I 'm guessing it was about 9 lbs. and it is my PB walleye from Port D. after fishing there for nearly 70 years .
I was also surprised that a walleye could be such a great scrapper .
    Fun day !

Looking at a 50's map of the Port Dalhousie area on the Navigator maps & I marked some spots where we fished then . Ships could enter Rennie Park for scapping  which has since been filled in to create the park . At the top (3 red dots) we took the girlies to the beach , now filled in where the marina is now . On the bottom (yellow dots) ...on the right was the "4 step falls"where we caught many silver bass , etc. ,& on the left side we caught lots of catfish in the very polluted bay (Rennie)
All that farmland on the right was excellent soil for growng fruit and also where I picked strawberries to buy my first car , a 1950 Pontiac torpedo back for $75)
That farmland , of course is now filled solid with plazas and housing .   Memories !

Squirrel is good food. Boil the pieces in water with garlic powder, sage, salt and pepper until meat is ready to fall off the squirrel pieces. Dip pieces in beaten egg and dredge in crushed Ritz crackers, Melt margarine in frying pan and brown the cracker covered squirrel. Serve with mashed potatoes and corn.
Bonus Jackrabbit with the squirrel. All with the LH bolt action 22LR.

When I was 16 I got my first gun , a 20 gauge Cooey single shot with a hammer and got my first rabbit first time out with it , about 200 yds. from where I am sitting right now . It was a lucky shot as the hammer slipped while I was raising the gun to my shoulder and the gun went off ....hitting the rabbit in the head as it ran to my left at 90 km. My uncle said "great shot" ....never told him it was an 'accidental great shot' .  We also went on "Jack" drives , walking for miles across wide open plowed fields where they like to sit with their "ears up" . They made the best stews you ever had ! And the bunnies made lovely rabbit pies . ( Tonights supper was chicken pot pie , made me think of the rabbit pies) .  I suppose you could do the same with those nutty flavoured squirrels .....

.....and ....btw ....that 10 acre field is now full of houses as most of my old "bush" spots that are now subdivisions . And Ford is ready to fill the greenbelt with more houses ,& plazas. If I want squirrel dinners I can set my trap in my yard and fill my freezer .

Got a huge doe last night on shotgun hunt. Had to get Mooselayer and another brother to help get it out. One slug behind the shoulder at 50 yds did the trick. Best thing about having my brothers to help out is that they brought beverages (I must have set a good example as the oldest brother).

Had the pleasure of getting out with smerch today after what seems to be forever. We headed out with the thoughts of multi species possibilities for the morning....a bit of floating around some minnows...fishing the bottom...and a bit of bottom bouncing in hopes of a trout a pike a perch or anything else that might bite for that matter...we spent a few hours giving it a go with no success...then I finally pulled one out of a hat. I think the sudden cold snap and weird weather today may have had them turned off a bit.... Let the cold water season begin!!!...lol.. Always a pleasure Bill..thanks for the pick up and the minnows and of course the good company. We will have to get out again soon

Hey guys I got it done this morning!! I'm jacked right now wohoo lol, had a nice 4 point but technically 3 point buck come out and got the job done. Such a big body on him. It's been 8 years since I got an archery deer. But I've had success over the years with the gun. I'm ever so thankful. I got him at 8am. I ended up getting him in the liver right at 15 yards. Boy was it a hassle getting him out he ran right into the swamp and saw and heard him crash. Only made it 75 yards.

What a screw up today !
I decided to go to Port Dal . toss a few lures around for salmon , pike , or anything !
There was no parking anywhere and people everywhere . So I took a chance & parked in front of a door way .( which is seldom used now)
I grabbed my gear .....but where's my net ??  So I will check for minnows first & grab a coffee ....but where's my wallet ??
No money , no net , do I.D. or drivers license ....So, I checked for minnows (lots of people from T.O. ? ,  fishing from the walk bridge .
No minnows anywhere , so back to Rennie where there were about 50 people ?? Ah , they have some races going on !!
Did I pick the wrong day or what ??  Off  I went straight home as I had no license .
BUT , I found a nice lure with 20 feet of line on the shore near the bridge ...don't know the name of it,  but it looks nice in my tackle box .

I dug me up about 2 dozen red wigglers today from my mulch pile ....maybe a shore perch trip soon ....

Had a great week up in Timmins area with the family and good friends from CFN.   Lots of fish, good food, great hosts, good company. Could not ask for anything more.  (Unless it was a 40" pike)
